A major fire that broke out in Guryong Village, a deprived area within Seoul’s wealthy Gangnam district, was fully extinguished after several hours, South Korean fire officials said. The blaze began early Friday morning and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
Authorities said no casualties were reported. More than 300 firefighters, over 100 vehicles, and a helicopter were deployed to control the fire, which spread through the densely packed housing area.
Guryong Village is one of the last remaining informal settlements in Gangnam and is slated for redevelopment into high-rise residential buildings, though hundreds of households still remain in the area.
